Regional Collaboration

Member Collaborations

A central strength of NTDC’s ability to fulfill our purpose is in how we collaborate with our funding members, the Northern Councils: City of Launceston, West Tamar, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands, Break O’Day, Dorset and George Town.

What this looks like?

Representation of the combined priorities of northern councils to:

  • State and Federal governments
  • Ministers and funding agencies
  • Infrastructure and planning bodies

Support for the development of projects that benefit more than one council, such as:

  • Major infrastructure
  • Freight and transport initiatives
  • Population and workforce programs

Acting as a neutral coordinator, helping councils:

  • Align priorities
  • Avoid duplication
  • Explore shared approaches where it makes sense

Gathering and analysing regional data on:

  • Population growth
  • Economic performance
  • Workforce trends

Helping councils connect with partners such as:

  • State and Federal agencies
  • Industry and investors
  • Universities and community organisations

Regional Collaboration Forums

Annually NTDC holds regional collaboration forums which gather regional leaders from all sectors to debate and determine how we prioritise infrastructure and investment projects, and government policies that will allow the region to thrive.

From 2023 to 2025, collaboration forums have determined:

  • Renewable Energy. Leveraging our opportunities around Tasmania’s investment in renewable energy and decarbonization;
  • Building Liveability. Enhancing our liveability and acknowledging the role this plays in population attraction and retention;
  • Improving Educational Outcomes. Growth in regional productivity and prosperity is fundamentally linked to educational outcomes;
  • Healthy Communities. Noting this plays a significant role in the region’s economic productivity; and
  • Building our Brand. Capitalising on our environmental strengths to grow our region’s export incomes.

Further forums saw the collation and assessment of projects from across the region to inform prospectus for two State elections and one Federal election.

Amazing initiatives have been uncovered ranging for large multi-million-dollar investments in stadiums and museums through to community housing and social services initiatives, upgrades to roading, trail and logistics infrastructure through to clusters of sporting facility upgrades and projects seeking to change the way we appreciate our food systems and sporting.

In 2024, the regional collaboration forum challenged itself to assess and determine which policies at both Federal and State level would best inform our future prosperity.
